Fat Face event day 1

My first time at Fat Face. I had signed up for it several weeks ago so had been praying for good conditions and Windy Summer 2008 did not disappoint. A superb day. I took part in all four of the masterblaster races in the freeride fleet and managed to complete each one. Here's how they went.

Race 1 @11am
RRD+5.2

350 windsurfers all beach starting at the same time. Crazy and very exciting. I got a reasonably good start and was one of the first freeride sailors round the mark. And then the wind dropped. GRRR. This plus all the dirty air from the sailors now upwind of me who were still making their way out to the buoy meant I hardly planed at all on the way back in. I limped home in a disappointing 45th. (still not bad though considering there were approx 180 sailors in the freeride fleet)

Race 2 @1pm
RRD+5.2

The tide was now up and so was the shorebreak. I took my time at the start to try and find a clear route out but was still taken out by a bloke in front who got mullered by a big dumper and was washed straight into me. Anyway I managed to recover and sailed a reasonably good race mega powered! Finished 24th - much better.

Race 3 @3pm
RRD+4.5

The wind continued to increase so I changed down to 4.5. Now we were right on high tide and the shorebreak was HUGE. Lots of brown wetsuits at the start. Again I took my time to launch after the gun but still got spanked twice. Amazingly though I was able to recover my kit no problemo both times and on the third attempt I squeaked through. And into the malestrom! Bonkers windy, manic chop left right and centre, keeping the board on the water was a real challenge and I couldn't avoid boosting big jumps on frequent occasions. Thank feck I had changed down to 4.5 and was on a waveboard. I stonked past several sailors who were struggling to keep bigger FSW/freeride kit under control and finished 11th! Woohoo! Would have done even better if I had gybed the mark for the amateur fleet instead of the one further out for the pros...

Race 4 @4pm
Fanatic+5.2

Crazy race 3 had taken its toll on the fleet and consequently the number of starters for race 4 dropped significantly. And so did the wind. I bagged out the 5.2 on the FSW but planed for only about 50% of the race. Should have gone 5.8 but I was knackered by now and couldn't face another re-rig in the pissing rain. Finished 17th out of only 31 freeride sailors.

Nevertheless with one discard at the close of play I was sitting in 14th position overall in the freeride fleet. Brill day! I think my Hove shorebreak experiences really gave me an advantage. Race 3 in particular will live long in the memory. :)
